Unaccompanied tenor trombone

Written for graduate students Wesley Nielsen and Matthew Gallegos. World premiere 4/24/25 by Matthew Gallegos.

Even the most level-headed performers can struggle with overthinking on stage. This piece, titled after a quote by one of my trombone teachers and conceived using mathematical music theory which I have since forgotten, depicts an internal conflict while on stage. After getting in a “groove” (in this case, samba), everything goes well and confidence soars. However, doubt has a tendency to creep back in and force more unnecessary cogitation. I hope that you find this piece cathartic and that it helps you in your battles against performance anxiety and large interval skips.
